Unhappy Kohler KS540-3011 Backfires through Intake

Kohler KS540-3011 Backfires through Intake
1. Last used my Cub Cadet (model 13A0A1CS056) riding mower without a problem
2. Parked it for about two weeks
3. Tried to start it, cranks strongly but no start and . . .
4. Backfires explosively through carburetor
5. Check flywheel key - intact and no apparent problem shifting
6. Checked electric solenoid valve at bottom of carburetor - activates w 12V jump
7. Took off valve cover - rockers are operating when engine is rotated
8. Checked spark with tester on plug. Good spark
9. Removed and cleaned carburetor. Reinstalled.

I’m at the end of my knowledge base. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all.

Usually lean conditions will cause that.... I know you checked fuel solenoid and cleaned carburetor and all that, but, are you getting fuel? Good flow from the tank? Fuel filter?

Billy-O - Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have checked fuel line and filter. Fuel is getting to carb.

I would re-visit the flywheel key.
Did you actually pull the flywheel off and inspect the key.
My experiences have been that the key can shear and the flywheel rotates.
You can remove the nut and washer and see the key which looks like it is in place when it really isn't.

Ironman - I will be pulling the flywheel today! I told my wife when this started up that I hoped it was the flywheel key because it would be the easiest - and cheapest - repair. So . . . I REALLY hope that your suggestion is right!

I pulled the flywheel and “unfortunately” the flywheel key is in perfect shape.

So - now I am starting to think about valves. Yikes!

Would a compression tester help me to narrow that down? Again I’m hoping one of you can give me an idea on the best path forward before I jump in and pull off the head - and very likely get myself in over my head!

Thanks again

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
