What is the typical cost of an engine rebuild at a shop, especially if needs machining? My neighbor (a retired mechanic) says we can rebuild it on his workbench at home, but if it's gonna need machining I might as well take it somewhere and let them do everything...

We have been through this before.
The definition or "rebuilt" is varied. To some, 'its all been rebuilt" means just that: Engine hot tanked/cleaned Crank rod pin turned/ground to undersize and new corresponding size rod installed. Cylinder rebored/honed to remove taper and out of round, with new piston rings and pin/keepers to match. Valves resurfaced as well as seats or replaced. Guides replaced if worn. Cylinder head resurfaced to true it up. New ball bearings for the crankshaft if needed. New seals for the crankshaft. Then address the fuel system: carb, filter hoses, air cleaner. Then the ign system points, plug, coil? There might be other concerns like Gov gear or something out of the ordinary. Then there are "flippers" definition: its all been reconditioned/rebuilt/ remanufactured. First and foremost a rattle can of paint on a dirty engine and other parts. The spark plug was replaced, and oil changed Then any simple repair so it starts and runs, might go as far as slapping in a set of rings to stop the mosquito fogger effect. and a good used battery. your milage will vary.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
