I was thinking of using the motor from a 147 in my 73. Will this work? (i believe 147 is narrow frame, but some people told me it will not work.)
If it won't work, why not? Also, are there any better ideas for a gasoline engine with more power? I don't have the replacement motor yet. So, awaiting advice. Thank you I love my 73 and want to use it again. I'd rather repower with more power than fix the old motor with bad carb and bad rod knock. |

I just got a 73 with a rebuilt motor, its a good runner. Lets see some pics of yours !! I believe the biggest motor without modification to the frame you can put in there is a K301 12hp motor. I am sure someone with more knowledge will chime in !!!

You will have to do some modification to the frame to get the 14HP to fit.
The 147 frame has modification from the factory for the bigger flyweel to fit. |

Other than expanding the frame around the flywheel it is bolt and go.

I've wondered if one of these Lomardini (Kohler) diesels could be made to work.

With wanting to use the correct paint and tires on this tractor you will be wasting your money if you put a different engine in it. I would get a Kohler manual, pull apart the existing and rebuild it. The 73's were a pretty low production machine.

I agree with Oak. The 73 is a low production model. Do yourself a favor and keep a piece of history original.
The Lomardini has a taper crankshaft on it. Odds are you are going to have to modify the frame to make that thing work. |

I gotta agree with the other guys, your 73 is more collectable left as a 73. Anyone can chop up a Cub and poke a big motor in it, not near as many of us have a nice 73 though.
Probably should restore your 147 too, not very many of them left around either...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
