I mowed 2 hours with my son's 1641 on sunday. The tractor ran well at w.o.t. but when I would turn off the pto and cut the throttle to half the engine would pop and start to surge and would continue unless I pushed it back to wide open. Shut the tractor off and let cool a while. Then restart and it will sit and idle smooth. We just bought this tractor, so we don't know any of its history. Thanks, eddy622611

I had a chance to run the tractor again to day. The surging seamed worse than I wrote about before, other than w.o.t. it is hard to get the tractor to run smooth. Its acts like it is going to stall and then it comes back to life again and again. Thanks, eddy622611

I looked up your carb online, it does not have the electric fuel metering rod so I don't think that is the issue like it was with my 2185. The next thing I can think of is possibly your coil is going bad, or one side of it is going bad. I know someone here had an issue with the coil on their twin engine causing about the same issues that you are giving. Maybe they will see this and chime in.

Thanks DX3. I just did a search on a briggs site and some of the results where a dirty pilot jet. I was going to order a carb kit and filter. eddy622611

Probably a wise thing to do, and very well might be the issue. I was just thinking of the rod not working right like mine had done, not some junk inside, LOL.

Well, atleast I'll be able to rule out a dirty pilot jet. When I adjusted the valves I had the plugs out and they where light brown. So I'm thinking more of a fuel issue than electrical, but I've been wrong before. Thanks, eddy622611

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
