Due to my ongoing battle with asthma, I recently broke down and bought a riding mower. I got the LXT 1040 with the 42 inch deck. It fits in my shed without having to modify the shed door.
My yard is small, 100 x 160, but the back is very hilly. I have a 10 percent grade across the back of the property and a short 15 percent grade from the patio to the back of my pond. The good news is that the LXT 1040 powers right up the steep hill with no problems. The other hill is no problem at all. In years past, I always had to mow across with my Toro Personal Pace mower just to get the back done, and that was kicking my butt. One down side to the rider is that I am used to a higher cut, around four inches is where I usually mow, but the Cub Cadet will mow at 3.5 inches at its highest. I am getting a little scalping in some uneven areas. I may have to spread some more good dirt to get rid of that negative effect. The mower is easy to operate. I do have to remember to disengage the PTO when backing up, but I guess I'll master that skill eventually. I choose the Cub Cadet over the John Deere D100 because the Cub had the 12 inch turning radius. My wife also liked the color combo over the Deere. Hopefully, I will have a long term affection for this mower. It has already won me over by turning an hour and a quarter job into just about 35 minutes! Daniel |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
