Your 122 has a replacement engine. They were all black.

Yep another red 122!

Using the production chart March 1966. I should have asked for the serial number on the engine. I can't see it on the tag pic you posted.

Were any of the early Cub Cadets painted red from the factory? I know some later ones were red, but I thought that all of the earlier ones were white and yellow?

Also, if I repaint this tractor, should I paint the engine yellow or black? Is there any "accepted" way to repaint a replacement engine when restoring a tractor?

All of the early Cub Cadets were yellow and white from the factory. If it were me, I'd paint the engine yellow. Especially, if you paint it.

I like the black engines but that's just me.

If it has a 12 hp motor its a 122, original paint scheme:

Interesting, on the pictures I've seen of members' 122s, they have black foot rests. But on the old ads and sales literature, the footrests are yellow. Did they vary by years or what?

They were all black. It was IH's advertising.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
