Default help needed!

K301 out of a 124

Trying to start my k301 engine tonight. I have fuel, spark, motor is turning correct direction, and head is hot. After it tried to run, and did run starter assisted for a little bit, it slowed down like connecting rod seized. After that, it will try to pull starter backwards. It has been timed with VOM as illustrated by Matt G, (as found on here in tech section). I tend to think that timing is way way too far advanced, and to back that up, I had to reshape the points to get it to fall in to range. Can explain that bit more if needed, but I literally moved the points contact so I could get timing without bottoming out the adjusting screw. I needed more adjustment closer to the block and the screw head would push it away when tightened.

Any Ideas?

I would forget about trying to set the points with a meter for the time being.
Just set them somewhere in the 0.015 to 0.020 range and see if it will run there.
You can fine tune later.
Did you have this motor running before?

been thinking about this for a while. This motor came off a 124 I got out of the woods behind the 107. I never saw it run. There had to be a reason they were in the woods abandoned for who knows how long... The engine was fully wired up, fuel plumbed , mechanically connected - throttle, choke, 4 oil pan bolts to frame . I never questioned it having been running then quit. But, If it had been torn down, and rebuilt, and cammed out of time, that would also affect the ignition. Am I correct? Timing marks are on the crankshaft. Points operate off the cam. It could have been opened up and put together wrong, then abandoned. I only had the head off to free up the valves, and wire brush the seats. Wanted to lap them, but wanted to get it running first.

It is all fixed now. Problem was, that I timed it to wrong mark. older motors use the T mark. I was using the s mark. This morning I pulled the motor, and off with the oil pan. cam timing was perfect, and motor internals have never seen daylight. Glad I did this, as the sludge buildup in the oil pan was atrocious. Had to use brake cleaner to help break it up and get it out. Got it back together and re set timing with other timing mark, and there it is. I went for maiden ride no seat, no fenders. Strange, but I felt like I was on a Farmall H. Exhaust temp ran at 400-450 degrees, and head temp ran at about 200-250. I think thats pretty good.
