All this talk about decks made me take a look at the 44c I have on the 582.It did not have an oem belt on it.It was a blue gates belt.I noticed when I put the deck on in the beginning of the summer that the adjustment rod stuck out a little more each time I mowed ,so I adjusted the belt till I ran out of adjustment this weekend. So I looked at the mule drive pulleys and the were pitted from previous rust buildup.I hit them with a wire brush before putting the used belt that came with the deck before I mounted it.The deck pulley was heavily pitted and between the two began to wear out the belt.
So off with the pulleys on the mule drive and were replaced with better ones from a donor,Then I took off the deck and replaced it with one with a smoother pulley.I have an new oem belt for it,and I figger I better take care of this before I ruin a 45.00 belt.Well next thing you know I looked at the underside and it needed some cleaning up,wire wheeled it and then hit with some primer and paint.Just letting it dry for a few days before I use it and see, hopefully the belt last. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Check your drive pulley on the pto and make sure the belts from the mule drive are as close as inline from looking at the side. You want the belt to run in the center of the pulley.
You mentioned thin, is it possible your deck pulley is a different size pulley than it should be. My 50c deck was made into a 50a by changing the pullley on the deck to accomodate the narrower belt. a narrower pulley would cause premature wear.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
