Default Mulching Mods

I did a search on this and found several threads where people had talked about modifying their decks to mulch, but it seems like every one of them said it was something they were planning to do and didn't report back.

Has anyone successfully converted an IH deck (like a 44A) to mulch? From what I've read, it seems you would have to weld in new baffling to completely surround the blades.

The reviews on Gator blades seem spotty as to whether they actually mulch, but I'd imagine that with their higher lift and more baffling, one could accomplish this.

I haven't done it, but my idea for doing it was to create a baffle that would curve around the blade at the discharge side of my 44a deck. I wouldn't weld it in place, but instead, weld it to a flat piece of steel with the radius cut in it for the baffle and two holes drilled in it to line up with the holes for the discharge deflector. This way it could be bolted on and easily removed. I have all kinds of projects that get trumped by other responsibilities in life.

Dave I love my gator blades! I need to get a set for my 1650/38 deck combo! Keep in mind theres not any blades that are going to 100% chop up your grass clippings. The taller the grass it is the harder it will be get rid of all the clippings no matter what set up you have.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
