The QL's were the first to use an actual flywheel starter with a flywheel stator to produce voltage. The 1x8/1x9 and earlier years used the big Starter/Generator mounted to the side of the engine. It would turn the engine via a belt to a pulley behind the PTO, then once started it converted over to a Generator to produce the needed voltage. For ease of maintenance I like the S/G's with the voltage regulator. If something goes bad it is pretty easy to get to and fix. With the stators you have to pull the QL engine and then pull the flywheel to replace the stator. While not an extremely difficult task, it is just time consuming, and more than what some people like to work with. But for dependability I think the QL system is just a bit better. Yes these are just personal opinions and I am sure differ with what others may think or feel, and that is all good too..

dang I wished that I hadn't lost the darn thing. Duke you are right in that it seems to take a screw and not a bolt. for the life of me I can't remember what the thing looks like. I do know that there is not much room between the PTO and block.
I'll pick up a 5/16" x 18 x 1" and go from there. BTW sorry for sticking this thread in the wrong forum. |
