Default DON'T buy this cub

Take a look at the ad for this 1015 on CL:

http://nashville.craigslist.org/grd/2530713404.html

This is copy and pasted from the ad: Selling because my 12-yr-old son is old enough to push-mow the whole yard now.

Now, I'm all about teaching kids responsibility, and the value of hard day's work. But selling the riding mower he used, and making the kid push the entire yard? That's tough! Maybe he should look into bonding with his son by taking time for them to fix the mower together. Oh well, I just found the ad funny and it kinda angered me at the same time.

When I was 12 I was using a push mower on three lawns, didn't kill me. And being paid $5.00 for two of them, nothing for the one at home.
Nothing wrong with teaching kids a little work won't kill them, plus it's good for their body. Have you seen some of the young today? I recall back in school there wasn't to many over weight kids as there are today, lazy!

I got to agree with zippy. I use to push mow yards for $5.00 back in the 70's and it didn't hurt me. When we were out from school for summer vacation we would be outdoors from sun up to sun down. I still mow the yard where i grew up for my mom, but now its with a Bobcat ZTR.

I as well do not see any reason a 12 yr old kid shouldn't be mowing the yard. Maybe his dad thinks he spends to much time with his face buried in a video game. A little hard work never hurt anyone. Just saying.

That's true, I've spent some time, behind a push mower.

I too did my time behind a push mower. I don't think there is any problem with that. I just recall the animosity I felt toward my dad when he purposely made mowing harder on me than was needed. I use to mow my neighbor's yard, but we didn't have a weed eater. When my dad finally purchased one, I asked him if he'd teach me to use it so I could trim around the neighbor's house. Instead of teaching me how to use it, he told me not to touch it because he didn't want me to mess it up. So, instead of I continued to trim around her house with an old knife I used. It wasn't a giant house or anything, but the fact that i was using a knife while there was a trimmer sitting in our basement always made me angry, lol.

Now, of course i am projecting my childhood on this situation. For all I know the kid may have payed his own money for the push mower and is excited he's using his own equipment, so the dad is getting rid of his old broke mower. But I think it is important for everyone to realize your kids want to be involved in your projects, and they want to learn from you. That's the main reason my second 123 is going to be painted pink, just like my oldest little girl has asked for her tractor (that's what she told me when she went with me to buy it) to be painted. And everytime she asks to drive my Case 222, I bend over backwards so we can pull it out of the garage. I see a lot of you guys bonding with your kids with these tractors, and I think it's great! Definitely something i yearned for as a child, and something I strive for with my kids.

I'll get off my sappy soapbox now. But know that I see nothing wrong with teaching a kid hard work, I just find it unfortunate that a learning and bonding experience is being lost.

I would gladly give up all of my cubs (except my 123) for one chance to work on my 123 (his old 123!!!) with my dad for the first time in my life as we never did that as a father & son....I'd like to see what he would think and say about me adding a hydraulic lift, 3 pt. hitch, plow, snow cab, snow blower, etc. to it, but he is gone now and that will never happen. The bonding point is well made, after all, what boy doesn't marvel and wonder at his dad's machine and sit proudly in it's seat one day as his dad once did?

I am not fortunate enough to have children yet in my life, but I hope that when and if I ever do then I would like to allow him or her the opportunity to work on and build up a tractor to call his/her own. Then if (s)he wants to mow with it, (s)he knows that by the sweat of his/her brow and the dedication in his/her heart that (s)he has earned a simpler way of solving a problem--mowing. (S)He can use the push mower for some of the tight trimming to get a little bit of a work out, other chores can keep him/her physically fit......maybe even a family bike ride!!

Agreed with all said already, I had mowing yards job as well and when dad was able to buy a rider oh I was in heaven but I was also the reason one of your dads said not to touch it as I could break anything! Lol. I think prolly the reason he had a rider is like every other house in my old developement, older overweight guy on .2 of an acre that I mowed with a push mower in 30-45 min! So he really didnt have a lot to mow and was going for funny and missed it a little! Lol

Fortunately I did get to build stuff with my dad and while it wasn't a cub it was still a blast!! Thanks for reminding me of it!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
