Help with a MTD trans pulley

I have a 90's wards 38in cut rider mtd -- the front drive belt to the trans pulley wore out I replaced it today but it slips in top speed rather serverly the old belt was rubber outside now you have to use the cord covered belts which would be more slippery. The operation of the trans pulley puzzels me exactly how it would or could work Think I remember it is best to replace frt& rear drive belts together but I replaced the back one last year and looks good and for a while it was doing this same condition even worse and straighten out later . CC lawn tractors use this same system right

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
