Update:
Bought new Kohler points and condenser. It fired up better, ran smoother, but eventually the problem came back again after it warmed up a bit. I now believe more than ever that it really just needs rebuilt, no amount of band-aid-ing the problem can compensate for the fact that it burns as much oil as it does gas Ok, that's an exaggeration, obviously, but there's truth to that as well.If I can't find a good used engine that I can afford, she will have to sit until winter, maybe tax return time. ![]() Thanks for your advice guys, really appreciate it. My gut feeling when it first started happening was that it was just time to let her rest, but it's great to have friends to bounce ideas off of before I settled into that ultimate conclusion. |

I also am in the same situation with my 1200. It would start right up and run strong as long as I want. But after last mowing, next time I started it up, it formed a blue mushroom cloud for the neighborhood. Now, it sits ready to pull motor out so I can rebuild it again.

Hahaha, my poor K in the 129 had the "mushroom cloud" going on for many hours of use before this problem. It was a testament to the integrity of the engine as well as my obsessive maintenance that the engine lasted as long as it has. I think I've been running on borrowed time for the last 100 hours....
I'm still in shock using my 2186 that doesn't use a drop of oil or even think about asking for an oil change after 25 hours. I got so used to checking and changing oil in the K301 that I didn't know what to do with myself! Here's to all of us getting new life breathed into our GTs soon.... |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
