why would you want to tear down a tractor in such good shape?

Not sure it needs a total tear down but it wouldn’t hurt to pull the engine out and give it a good cleaning. The fins probably have some buildup. The CV joint for the tilt steering will need to be cleaned and re-packed and it is a PITA to get at with the engine in place. I’d check the CV joints on the drive shaft and make sure they have been greased and check the bolts that hold the rear end in to make sure they are tight and that the mounts are not broken. Change the Hy-Tran and filter. I'd also pull the fender pan, fuel tank and clean the crud off the top of the hydro and replace the bungs that go into the bottom of the fuel tank and replace the fuel lines. All this stuff is due at the age of this tractor. Ask me how I know.

Grease but absolutely do not over grease the cv joints, don't even ask how I know. Check both the front and rear oil seals. Remove all the tins around the engine and clean the fins well. Your tractor will run cooler doing that. I remove mine at least once a year to clean the engine fins. Something else that is opposite to other tractors is when you shut the engine down, first speed up the engine to at least half throttle and then shut it down. Otherwise backfires can occur and that is hard on head gaskets. Closely check the valve covers mine were cracked at the corners. The replacements worked perfectly with even an improved gasket seal. Keep that engine clean and it will go wherever and do whatever you have in mind.
Pulling the engine is just 4 bolts a few wires and then you can slide it forward enough to get to the fan shroud which has to be cleaned too. Mice and other critters like that area.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
