Hi, I’m new both to this board, Cub Cadets and also new to tractors.
My issue: A few weeks ago, I bought a 2004 GT3235 with 184 hours… my first tractor ever. I bought it because I figured a used garden tractor like this would be better than an equally priced, top of the line Craftsman. Well, the steering is loose (1/4 turn of play) and it seems to be all coming from the steering pump/steering column. That is, no play in the front wheels nor hydraulic steering cylinder/mounts located on the frame. Other CC Models with same steering pump The steering mechanism is hydralic where a "steering pump" using a gerotor meters hydralic fluid pressure to steer. This design is found on tractors: 3165, 3184, 3185, 3186, 3204, 3205, 3206, 3208, 3225, 3235, 3240, GT3100, GT3200, GT3204, GT3235 Questions: 1) Has anyone heard of this being a problem? Especially after 184 hours?? 2) Not having experience with hydraulics, does this system need to be bled similar to how automobile brakes need to be bled? If so, how is this done? 3) What is the check valve (manual shoes a ball valve and an optional manual valve). What is it’s purpose? Maybe used for bleeding the system? 4) I just received the service manual from MTD… Removal of the steering pump seems straightforward (and somewhat time consuming), but rebuilding the steering pump on a bench is outside my capabilities. Are there common problems that can be addressed by some simple procedure? (e.g., flushing it somehow? Although I can’t imagine how 184 hrs have contaminated it). Thanks in advance for any assistance, Jim |

I have a 3235 also and I have recently notcied a bit of steering slop also, I notice some of the slop actualy comes from the axle twisting.
I have also always had a hard time keeping it going straight down the road, like to wonder one way than the other. There is not enough tie-rod to give proper tow-in to cure the wondering. My 3235 get a good workout around the place as it needs to earn its keep. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
