Rebuilding a 60" 374 deck
We used the 2072 for mowing this week for the first time since rebuilding the deck. I underestimated how bad of condition the deck was in when I bought the machine. The only thing that did not need rebuilding was the spindles. I was not happy with all the corners Cadet/Haban cut when building the deck. For starters the rear wheels had no bushings. I bored them out and turned the OD before making some bronze bushings for them. I made new hardened axle pins as well. Next the front wheels were replaced with some that used needle roller bearings. I also had to straighten one and replace the other pivot pin for the front gauge wheels. With all the load on one side of the wheel instead of a fork setup such as on a bushog, they are destined to bend. I also had a couple of cracked welds to fix. I couldn't help but notice that this deck must have been welded by hand as some of the welds are inconsistent from one side to the other. As heavy as these decks are, there was no sign of any collisions to repair. I did have to fix an area that had rusted through. New blades, idler pulley, idler bushings, belt, as well as sandblasting paint and decals and it was a done deal. There was some unusal wear on the mule drive that I had to weld up. It came from not being installed properly.
