Sorry if this is a common question, it's new to me.
I was mowing yesterday. For the first 2-3 hours, I had no issues. Then, the deck belt started coming off of the front mule drive pulleys. I would put it back on, and it would sometimes stay on for a while, but sometimes it would pop right off. I got frustrated and finished mowing with a push mower. Haven't looked at it since. Any suggestions as to where to focus my problem-solving? Could it just be the belt? Thanks for any help and guidance. Silvio |

Is this belt a genuine Cub Cadet Belt or an after-market belt...???

Are either of the mule drive pulleys loose, ie: bad bearings?, and I will take it that you had the belt tension adjusted correctly? Also with what Roland asked, is the belt and OEM Cub belt? Most aftermarket belts can't handle the twisting and rotation that the mule drive puts them thru.

Not sure about the make of the belt. It's been on the tractor since bought it, though. I mowed all last year and this year so far with it, however. I wondered about the tension, but that wasn't changed either since I've had it. Once it started popping off though, I did tighten the tension a bit. How do you know that the tension is correct?

I had the deck off today and found some play in the center spindle. However, the double pulley on the top of it was very wobbly. Do I just unbolt that and replace it, or can I replace the bearings inside of it?

Some of the spindles on those 44 and 50 inch decks are rebuildable, but I think most are the replaceable kind. If you take it off and you can separate the spindle housing then you should be able to rebuild it. To remove the pulley, just loosen the top nut then remove the spindle bolts from the deck and then tap the the nut with a hammer to keep from messing up the threads. Once the spindle is loose, remove the nut and the pulley will separate from the spindle.
Here is the link for the deck, it should help you with belt adjustment: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/pdf/44-...ers_Manual.pdf

Quick update: I took off the old center pulley and replaced it with one from an extra deck that I have. Had to replace the drive belt because it was cut in a few places from the old pulley going bad. Was able to mow for a few hours tonight without issue.
Thanks for the help. Last question: I have the old spindle on my work bench. I took off the top nut, but the double pulley won't come off. Fom the parts diagram it looks like I could replace the bearings inside of this. Or at least someone could, so it could be used again. Anyone know of someone who could do this? |

If you have the mule drive with the spring attached to the pulley, page 4 of the manual tells how to adjust it: http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/QA%2038-42...20Manual-3.pdf If you have the lever type mule drive, page 8 shows a diagram of the proper tension and lever position: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/pdf/38_...p%20Manual.pdf

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
