SLT 1554 axle removal?

I have a friend who has a Cub Cadet SLT 1554. A recent storm blew a tree onto his SLT 1554. It bent the right rear axle. After a couple of weeks I told him to bring it to my house and I would try and fix it for him.

So today I removed the rear transmission assembly. I removed the bolt that holds the wheel hub onto the axle and then lightly tapped on the hub to remove it from the axle. While doing this the axle popped out of the assembly. I was suprized at this because the local cub cadet service center told me the case had to be separated to remove the axle.

So. Did I break the retaining clip that holds the axle in? Or is it a spring loaded clip like the ones used in a lot of front wheel drive cars that hold the transaxles in the tranny? All the parts manual says is spiral retaining clip.

I stopped at this point until I find out more. I popped the old axle back in and it seemed like it popped right back in place. I don't want to tear into this any further if I don't have to.
