Default 129 - steering wheel shaft problem

I'm starting to go through the 129 I picked up a couple of weeks ago. The steering wheel is sticking too far up. Can you tell me how this happened and what to do to fix it?

The steering wheel is not sticking too far up, that is the normal position. The plastic bushing has come out of the tube, so you'll need to remove the steering wheel and install either a new plastic bushing or the upgrade part, a ball bearing (which happens to be the same size as the front wheel bearing for the 3/4" spindles, IIRC), up there. The later tractors have a foam donut that goes between the steering wheel and the bushing that sort of helps keep it in the column.

$4 part and an $80 tool to remove the steering wheel.

Can anyone tell me anything about the upgrade part that was mentioned? Is it worth it?

With any luck I can get the steering wheel off w/ out the tool. What are the chances I break it in the process w/out the tool?

You don't need that $80 tool, you just need a harmonic balancer puller and a block of hardwood. (See next post for picture, I got in too much of a hurry and forgot it)


You can use the bolt and nut trick too, but you'll wreck the bearings in the column if there is any amount of rust in the splines on the wheel.

Honestly, I'd just grab the bushing with a pair of pliers and then try to pry it back into place with a screwdriver. I just did that on one of mine, as somehow it vibrated out like yours did. As long as it isn't really worn, it'll probably stay there and be fine.

Did the same trick on my 782 and used some crazy glue to keep it from coming back out.No problem ,no more

I was at TSC recently, and while in the hardware section, noticed (in the special hardware parts bins) they have 1-3/8" flanged bearings. They are Very cheap, too. Definitely good enough for the top of a steering column, but Id never put them in the front wheels. Thats just to put out there, if you decide to pull the steering wheel.

That is where I found my bearing to put in my 128 steering. The exact same one. Works real nice.
