Default 1872 - Standard SGT rear end...

So i was browsing the local CL and I came upon an 1872 that the owner was selling for parts. He did disclose that it 'threw the driveshaft'. We all know what that means.... a busted AL rear end. I called him, and he was about 4 miles down the road from me. I looked it over in the pouring rain, made him an offer, and he took it.

I finally pulled the rear this weekend, and pulled it apart last night to survey the damages. Here is what I found:

And everything was put together with red loctite.. and the rear end bolts were WELDED to the frame. Yes, WELDED.

It's amazing what PO's do to the cubs. Congrats on your 1872.

That's a ton of crud! What's your plan with it? Are you going to try and get another rear end? Cast or Alum?

I think I'm just going to drop a CI rear end in and call it done... unless someone has a line on a local AL rear and a hydro coupler for a super, with the splines. When it kicked out the driveshaft from the rear end pitching back so far, it knocked off one of the ears on the hydro end of the driveshaft coupler, and they are $125!

I spoke to Rich Patton this morning about dropping a CI in my 2072 and he was telling me that the supers are geared diffrently then the GT so you'ld have to swap the internals between them. He wasn't sure how the gearing would effect the super if you just bolted on CI rear up and swapped hydro pumps.

Just last week I had to spend the $$ for that rear coupler so I know your pain!

Matt has a write up on the rear end swap. I'm sure he'll post on this thread and help us both out.

I think it will, but I'll have to use a non-super pump, so my max ground speed will be faster due to the 26" tires instead of 23". I really would like to swap over the internals, but I don't think I have the tools, or the shims, to properly setup the AL gears in the CI rear end. Otherwise, it would be a no-brainer, as I have great AL internals, and a good CI rear end.

Not sure if that can be done or not. Why would you use the non super pump?

Because to use the super pump, you have to pull the differential out, the pinion, and the reduction gear, and swap the reduction gear out. The reduction gear in the super rear is larger to account for the smaller output shaft on the super's pump.

And, to use the super pump, I'll need to buy the $$ coupler. I may still change out the reduction gear and use the super pump. Anyone know how to get the plug out of the front of the CI diff housing without destroying it?

Call our site sponser or place an ad in the wanted section of the site for a used coupler. You might get luckey and save some cash. It's worth a try.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
