Hey all,
I'm trying to clean up the Cub and accessories. In a nutshell I have a father-in-law that can't follow directions and decided to go his own way in assisting my project. Anyhow, long story short he decided that he "HAD" to take the drive shaft for the snow blower apart. Thankfully I rescued the cap but don't have a clue what to use for a gasket. I have been everywhere looking for a replacement, the Cub dealer said they couldn't get anything and didn't even offer a suggestion. I went to the power train place in town that builds drive shafts and rack and pinion stuff. They didn't even have anything. Thankfully he had a suggestion although he said it was "OLD SCHOOL"....just find some leather (old shoes or belt) and cut it to the size I need...maybe a couple thick. I think it's my only option unless you have something else. Also, when I bought the tractor one of the pulleys was broken. Anyone have somewhere they order those heavy cast replacements from. If so, what number? The Originals on Ebay are a bit spendy. I just want to make sure I get the correct replacement for the belt. Thanks in advance, Randy ![]() |

You say you saved the cap? If that is what screws onto (or otherwise acts as a retainer for the gasket) the female side of the drive shaft, than you can cut an "O"-ring from heavy 1/4"-3/8" thick felt. That is what was used on the rear axles of 8n fords and GM torque tubes.

I don't believe there is any kind of gasket in there, just the metal cap.
Motion Industries and probably also McMaster-Carr have cast iron pulleys that will work. |

OH the pulley! Try Tractor supply they have a good selection, I think you can order online if no local store. I use a local industrial belt/power transmission supply. Good luck

I'll look into the felt.
We do have a tractor supply up in Ankeny. I tried Shoppers supply which is similar to TS, they had some pully's but they didn't seem very heavy. Thanks for the help. |

FWIW: when you slide the drive shaft together, make sure you have the yokes aligned,so as not to cause excessive vibration/wear.

If you go to TS they might have pulleys in two places light duty by the belts or wheels and heavy duty ones in the tractor parts section, these have weld on hubs and you can make up most any combo. you'd need

There is a Motion Industries in Ankeny, IA according to their website. As I said before, they will have what you need...a Browning CI pulley in the correct size is ~$25 or so (or was the last time I bought one). |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
