That engine is probably 25+ years older than the engine you are replacing, it doesn't look even close to the same, and Onan parts are exorbitantly expensive. Generator engines usually have a tapered crankshaft, so that would make fitting a PTO clutch very difficult.

I'd look for a Kohler M18 or M20 if I were you...much more plentiful, cheaper parts, more or less direct fit, etc.

I'd save your $50...if there is anything at all wrong with that engine, it would probably cost more in parts to fix it than the engine is worth.

I always wondered if those generator Onans would work or not too. Of course I don't have a cub with that motor, but always wondered. I have seen a couple of the generator motors on CL down in this area in the last few months for a good price.

Matt, you better stay away from the Gravely web forums, they will send out a mob if you say something like that there.

Onan is out of business, but, every part needed is available at the reasonable cost. I rebuilt a 24HP basket case!!

I mow with a 24HP Onan Performer, if somebody brings over a tractor that can out mow it I will fix them the best free lunch they ever had!!

There is nothing wrong with old tractor engines, actually it is almost impossible to find a tractor that delivers more horsepower-hours per gallon than a 1958 JD 820. Check the Nebraska test numbers, it will surprise you!!

Many JD 820s' are rebuilt for field work rather than show, because of fuel costs.

I think that Onan would be in my shop for $50!!

I have also wondered about the 4 cylinder military engine swap, like the one they did on xtreme: http://www.xtrememotorworks.com/Cub%20Cadet%20982T.htm

They are pretty easy to find.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
