Default New to me 149

I picked this up yesterday. 149 with a 42" deck and a POS home made front blade. The engine runs on starter fluid, but it does not drive. I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. The tractor is in nice shape. No rust, decent paint, good tires. Somebody made a cable lift for the home made front blade. They also installed a radio!, horn, and a rear ball hitch. I will start some other threads with specific questions and projects as they come up.

Blade mounted to the deck lift frame

Ball hitch and mount.

Under seat radio

Just fits in the barn with the 125.

Default Nice find

I like the new addition and the two look good side by side. I gotta do me a radio like that. Wonder if my of Craig 8 track will fit. Still got some Zep and Stones cassettes Looks like someone took care of it. Good luck and have fun with it.

Nice and rust free, how is the deck? You can pull the tunnel cover off and see if the hydro release valves are stuck in the down position.Show us some pictures of them...if they are,it will not move.

They are stuck in the down position. I pulled each one of them and by knocking them around a bit got them to move. I re installed them, but I ran out of time to do much else. I need a battery and have to get the engine running before I can do much with it. It rolls freely, which I assume is because the release valves are down. I did notice that the fluid on the valves had an almost mint like smell. It was a familiar smell. More like power steering fluid than like the jug of Hytran that I have. Would the wrong fluid make it not run right?
I have a few things to do before I can get into any problem solving.
I need a battery.
I have to get the engine running, which may include carb rebuild.
I should change motor oil
I should change Hytran (or whatever is in there) and filter.
I think this is the best order to go in, but I am open to suggestions.
Should I make removing the balance gears a priority?
My 125 is running great and ready for snow work so I can afford to take my time with the 149 to make it right.

The deck is in nice shape. the paint is still good and it is not rusted. Everything but the idler turns freely. the belt is in bad shape and I don't have a drive belt for it. The deck hanger and mule drive are a little banged up from use of the home made blade that was mounted to it. the deck has no wheels.

I am down in Westchester County. I bought it in West Milford, NJ. The guy has an Original for sale too. It is pretty rough, but appears to be complete. He is not really a Cub Cadet guy, but he knows it is a rare and sought after tractor. It has been under a tarp for what looks like years. He says he wants $400 for it. Claims it was running when parked it. I told him that he would probably not get $400 for it. If anybody is interested, I can send his contact information.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
