Default 1861, Defective Switch, or Normal!!??

On my 1861, you can lock down the brake pedal, then without sitting on the seat, turn the ignition switch and the engine will turn over.

I got that!!

The problem is the engine will not start!!

The seat switch must be engaged (you got to sit on the seat) for the engine to get spark!!

I have a hard time remembering this!!

This happens to me this time of the year, the battery is run down, I am running around making sure the jumper cables are hooked up, carb getting gas etc...., I forget I got to sit on the seat or the engine will not start.

Is this normal or do I need to replace a switch!!??

Duke, are you sure of that? On my 1864 I can start it with the brake pedal down, but I'm not in the seat. The seat switch does work, will kill the engine if I get off without pushing the brake down. I'm thinking his brake switch is faulty so without being in the seat it won't start.

Ditto what Dave said. My 1641 is the same way. I can lock the pedal down and start it without being on the seat.

CAD, I'd look at the brake switch. I have a feeling you'll either find the bracket loose so it doesn't get depressed, or the switch is faulty. If you are running, and set the brake, and then get out of the seat does the engine shut off?

Loose bracket/switch sounds very possible. I seem to remember last summer occasionally the brake pedal needed a couple tries to allow the engine to run while off the tractor.

That is just something I don't remember for months.

The 1861 runs/functions perfect as long as you are in the seat. I don't expect it to stay running very often when I am not in the seat.

I find myself picking up stuff in the yard, could be sticks or similar, or items the kids left in the way, so I shut off the deck, throttle down, set the brake, and get off rather than shut down the engine every time. I'd find it really annoying if the tractor shut down every time I got out of the seat!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
