I know there is an engine forum; however, this forum gets all the traffic. The 782 I want to buy is an '83 model. I assumed that the engine was a series II based on the year. I'm not sure how to check.
The engine specs are: Model: KT17S Spec: 24193 S/N: 12121831 Is this a series I or II? Thank you! |

Series I engines have Spec numbers from 24,000 to 24,299.
Series II engines have Spec number from 24,300 & up.

I have a friend of mine that has a 682 with a Series I in it. He has level ground and does regular & good maintenance on his engine and has had no issues.

To be a series II the spec number should be 24300 and higher.
It's looks to be a series I, but if the PO had flat yard and no hills all this time the motor should be fine. And if your yard is relatively flat you should be fine. Series I motors are known to have issues, but usually with being used on hills where the motor is not able to lubricate sufficiently thus causing the failures. Edit: Roland is faster than me this morning. LOL

The Series II air cleaner and flywheel shroud will also say 'Series II' (Assuming nobody's been switching stuff around) and the oil fill cap is a metal pipe plug on the Series I and a plastic cap on the Series II.

A little common sence in the operation will go a long way to long life.
Do not rev a cold engine, give the oil a chance to warm up and splash into the rods. Many series 1's are still running. but when they go boom, it is much better to go to series II or better yet, Magnums. Little rebuild parts are avail for series I's. Some series II parts can be modified to work in 1's but really not worth the time. |

Both DX3 and MattG are correct regarding how to identify one of the Series 2 motors. You are mowing on level ground, so provided the Cub has been well maintained all these years, there should be no reason to be overly concerned with the series 1 motor provided it is in good shape now. Eventually the Kohler wil wear out and you can repower the 782 with an engine of your choice. Between now and then, be on the lookout for a series 2 replacement.
My series 2 engine is number 24363, so I have one of the early ones from 1986 or 87. |
