Default My 680 Hydro with pics.

You asked for pics.

This is my 680 Hydro. It's the first Cub Cadet I owned (Grandpa already owned the series 1000 before we moved out here).

I mowed with it all last summer just as I got it. I absolutely love it.


I have the side panels, but I think it looks better without them.


I got this 680 about a year ago. I took it in exchange for doing some home improvement work for an old woman. So I really only paid for it with a few hours of time.


According to the woman, her husband bought it new and had it serviced yearly by our local AG shop. In the few years since her husband passed, her neighbor had been using it, and she had no idea what he did with it.


It's definitely been abused the last few years, but not too bad.
First noticeable problem is the air cleaner housing is held on with a bungee cord. I'll either find a stud or make one by the end of this season.


Second is the lift lever is held up with a chunk of 2x4. All of the internals of the lift lever are gone. This is what I was working on solving when I found OCC. I got something working this week, but I'll show it in the next post.


Last major bug isn't as noticeable by looking. I'm having a problem with the PTO. If I've been mowing for a good while it will randomly shut off and not come back on, or if I shut the PTO or the tractor off, the PTO won't come back on. Once it cools down for a bit, it will work again. ( I think I read another thread here of someone having the same problem not solved yet.) It may have something to do with this splice in the wire leading into the PTO, but I haven't messed around enough to know for sure.


I've done a bit of homework on 680's, but I'm not an expert at anything.
Any info, advice, diagrams, manuals, instructions etc.... will be greatly appreciated, even if it's something I've already found.
I'll try to keep this thread updated as necessary.

Like I said, I got the lift lever working this week. It ain't pretty, but it's working.
I got tired of reading "not avaliable" on every parts list I could find, so I took measurements and started looking around the shop for ideas to make one.
If you can't read my notes, don't bother. The measurements are correct, but I was unaware that the catch at the bottom doesn't travel the entire range allowed by the cut out in the lever shaft. That threw the whole project out of whack.
I came up with a 3/8" steel rod, a 3 3/4" x 1/2" spring, a couple 3/8" x 1/2" sleeve bushings, a 3/8" shaft collar, 3/8" axle nut, and a 3/16" roll pin.


The spring fit in the hole like it was meant to be there. a 3/4" long sleeve bushing presses the spring in and the shaft collar holds it all in place. Excess length in the rod is because of catch not traveling to top of cut out in the bottom.


At the bottom end, I put a roll pin through the rod to act as a catch. Made the bottom of the rod a bit too long for the same reasons as the top.


It ain't pretty, but this is my "hey, at least it works now" fix.

When I get the notion to make it better, I've got a few ideas.
1/4" roll pin instead of 3/16". The 3/16" has a lot of play in it.
Find (hopefully) a 5/16" x 1/2" sleeve bushing, thread the top of the rod, tap threads in the bushing, screw the bushing on tight, cut the rod flush with the bushing and paint it black. Would look about right I think.

Adjust the air gap on your clutch and it might cure the intermittent operation.

Been forever since I've been on (long story, broke my back), but the 680 never quit! Used it as my main workhorse for mowing and plowing snow for years, tried to put a snow thrower on it but didn't have tire weights so that didn't work lol.
Lift handle mod didn't last long, had to set it in place and use a pair of baby vice grips to hold it, and put a new roll pin in twice, but it worked otherwise.
2 years ago, it started leaking oil pretty bad, so I replaced some gaskets and gave it a tune up (still leaked, but not nearly as bad).
2 weeks ago, my brother came over and pulled the dead engine from my 1450 and put the engine from the 680 in it since I can no longer use a manual lift. Now I can attempt to garden again.
Everything we didn't pull from the 680 is now pushed up to the fence row waiting for me to figure out what to do with it, but it's spirit lives on.
