I have to keep clicking my starter for it to catch when it wants to The is battery good, all seems OK. I cant figure it out, its only after sitting a while it happens. The old days we would pull the starter as I did to this one, look for the dead spot, put it in drill press chuck, and emery it shiny. Ii did this to this starter, along with checking brushes, all looked good. I hope its not the crazy safety brake pedal switch. It's still doing it, but will start when I tap the starter. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Let me get this right
Its not going up and catching the teeth on the fly wheel? OR Its not kicking in, the solenoid is clicking but its not pushing the starter gear up? How are you testing your batt? Just a VM? If so see what the voltage drop is when you turn the key. If the voltage drop is less than about 10.5, you don't have enough voltage to turn the starter. Remember that starter, I'm guessing, will draw around 150 amps to turn. So if you have a 195 amp batt, well you get the pic, you burn your starter up. As far as the safety switches, as long as you hear the solenoid clicking, ALL the safety system is fine. The starter is the last stop in the safety system. |

Hi thank you for the fast reply, love the jokes, you are right life is to short not to. the batter is the original since 98, lol. but i have only checked it by the old way of putting on a 10 second load with meter, and it saying it was good, not knowing what its putting out.
the starter is a click click click, and clicking remains until it will now and then catch, as far as the engaging, it will start once it catches. and if i contiounsly get the clicking while i keep turning the key and it does not catch, i tap the side of the starter itself then it seem to catch, if that makes any sense. mabye im to much of an old backyard mechanic, like i said in the old days on the cars, the starters would sometimes have a dead spot on the armatures, one emery cloth was applied they would always fire up and turn over. i guess this isnt the instance. you think?

The other thing i thought of when Sam posted is if your batt has a bad cell in it, the pto will draw more amps than what the stator can put out to the batt. This is why sometimes elec Ptos will cut off after some time of running. Very rarely do they go bad. All an elect PTO is a coil or an electro magnet. This is why on some you have to adjust the air gap on them.

FWIW:
Most new starters are Perm magnet. If you keep hitting it you will break the magnets rendering it usless. jump across the sol. with say a screwdriver, and if it starts it is a sol. problem. |
