Default Oklahoma guy

Hello all! Great forum you have here.

My name is Garry and I'm from Okahoma hence the user name "garrynok".

I live on two acres and retired about four years ago. I've spent most of the last four years reworking the old house. Lots of work!

My dad was a mechanic and it sorta rubbed off on me. I enjoy bringing old stuff back to life and finding out what makes it tick. I'm hoping to get my eight year old grandson interested also so that is one of the reasons I'm thinking about a project.

Currently I mow the yard with a lt1050. I don't have any complaints, it's pretty cheaply thrown together but it mows the grass. Some of my land is really bumpy, I need to drag some gravel out and have a couple of trailers to move around so I'm thinking about rebuilding an ole Cub for that kind of duty (as well as gardening). I don't really have a preference although I do want a hydro. In my area there is an 1811, 1864 and several quite lines for sale. I'm in no hurry, time is on my side. Any of the wide frames would work I guess. I'll have lots of questions.

I admire the work you guys do on your projects. Sorry about the long winded post but hey....I'm long winded.

Garry

Garry,

I have a 1864 and love the power steering and hydraulic lift on it. The 1811 has hydraulic lift on it as well. Most don't like the looks of the 1864's but After having this for a couple months I've fell in love with it. My son has a 1650 that is a real workhorse as well. It sounds like your going to take your time and you'll end up with the right tractor for you. Do you plan on putting in a garden?

Thanks for the welcoming folks. You guys make a fellow feel right at home.

Duke, Yeah, I'm trying to sort out what I want to do, I already have a garden but want to enlarge it. I really like the restorations on the narrow frames and and older stuff. I could grab a 124 twenty miles from me for $200 right now. That would make a great restoration project but I like the idea of a hydro. I like the 82 series because they look like they are pretty open to engine swaps and a lot of options are available in the restoration area if you aren't a true purist.

That brings me to the newer stuff like the 1811 or 1864. The only question I have about them is the aluminum rear housings compared to the IH cast iron. Looks like the cast iron would be a little better for weight but the aluminum housing has the fine spline axles which I'm guessing would be a little stronger. But what do I know? Lots to mull over.

Thanks again guys for the welcoming!

Garry

Garry there has been several that have been doing the swap from fine spline to cast iron rears with great results! I don't know if the 1864's can be swaped with cast iron but I'm sure someone here knows that answer. With the 82's you can do the swap.

Gardens can be plowed then tilled up or plowed and disc'ed up. (if disc'ed is a word)

We're glad to have you! Good luck with your search!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
