Talking My 1st Cub Cadet

My birthday is just around the corner and I have always wanted one of these little tractors so I bought myself one. From what I have been told it is a 1967 (haven't checked the serial numbers yet) model 102. When I first started looking for one of these tractors I seen a completely restored one on craigslist and I new I had to have one, so a month later I finally found a nice one. This one does have the 10 hp kohler in it. I was told that it was bored .030 over, and has a new head On the bad note it has a knock in the motor, think it might be a rod. Other than that it starts up great and runs well for the most part. It wasn't charging the battery though, I could only start it 5 times and the battery would be dead. This was with a full charge. I checked the date on the battery and it was 12/05 so I figured I would just get a new one. So I bought the best walmart battery they had, 350 ca & 285 cca. I Haven't had the time test it out yet, but its sitting on a battery tender just in case it is a starter/generator issue. I did get a 12 hp kohler that was out of a low hour 127, who know if it runs or not just going by the guys word. It has brand new 23x10.5-12 hi run tires out back, and 4.00-8 GBC tri-ribs up front. I really dig the skinny front wheels and big back tires look. The headlight are brand new nos, and has a brand new headlight and key switch. It also has a new throwout bearing, clutch disks, and teaser spring. As well as all new steering parts and balljoints. The clutch is way out of adjustment, it only uses the last 2" of travel to disengage the clutch and apply the brake. It works but I know its definitely not right. The seat is original and only has one crack in the rubber and is in pretty good shape. It has the 3 pt hitch and the mule drive up front. I didn't get any attachments or mounting hardware with it. It looks like someone tried to paint it a long time ago. It kinda rough and not the right cub cadet colors. I gave $300 cash and a shotgun worth $200 for it. Sorry for the long post, but Im just so excited about this little tractor. I think I came down with a heavy dose of yellow fever.

Very nice 102! The 1x2-1x3 series are one of my favorite cubs.

Default Congratulations and Resources

gamehunter2007: Congratulations on a great find. I'm looking for a 122 myself.

Your machine looks to be in very good shape, I wouldn't be too hasty to judge the clutch/brake adjustment, though. The pedal doesn't work like a car.

In case you don't have access to manuals, I've posted below excerpts from both the Operator's and the Service Manuals. The illustration from the Operator's Manual is clearer than the one from the Service Manual, but it is the same diagram in each manual.

Your charging issues may be due to a poor ground --the first thing I would check.

You also might need to clean and adjust the mysterious Voltage Regulator. Paul Funk has an interesting write-up on the mechanical and electrical aspects of a Voltage Regulator on his site:

http://www.cubcadetman.com/content/i...tor-&Itemid=53

But I've also posted the pages from the Service Manual detailing its cleaning and adjustment.

Good Luck!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
