Default 782 research questions*LONG POST*

I am going in the morning to look at a 782 so I am doing research on what to look for. According to the PO his family has owed the tractor since it was 4 years old and it had mowing duty until 2 years ago when it was replaced by "gulp" a JD . Since then it has had wagon duty and been stored. He has the tractor and a 44" deck. Its a base model 782 with the manual lift. This is what I do know. It was originally a recovered theft back in the 80s when it was purchased(note the white panels and no decals). It has been regularly serviced until last year by a local shop. It has a series II KT17. The PO stated it ran fine until he started it on the 15th to take the pictures and it started only running on one cylinder he was able to trace down no fire on one side thinks the coil has went bad. It doesnt charge. He said it had done that in the past and they replaced the key switch last time to fix it. Tires are decent. Hydro works as it should. I already know to check the rear end bolts anything else to look for? Here is the bottom line $300 cash and Ill spend $25 in fuel picking it up. Worth it or Im a buying a parts hungry monster? Here is a picture off of his ad

Check the serial number Don because the 782 should have the hydraulic lift.
That one might be the 682.

PO says the shop that services it says its a 782. I wont have the serial number until tomorrow when I go look at it. If it is a 682 how does the effect the price?? I have most of the hydraulic components already to make it hydraulic if I buy it.

Don, that is a 682 like Mike said. Looks like the serial tag is gone also or painted over in the pic.

It appears that you may have a tractor poblem.... I know where your coming from brother. When one shows up for sale near you, ya gotta have it. BTDT! Now go get that red tractor!

Oak is it worth that even as a 682? Id rather have a 682 or 782 then the 129 and 124 I have . Ill just sell some to buy it I just dont want to end up with a parts monster. I think the 682 and the 2 982 clones I have would make a nice group lol.

Don, I would say yes. For $300 you can't go wrong. The engine could be an issue but there are a lot of good parts on that by the looks of it.

I can't think of any way the coil could go bad and provide spark to one cylinder and not the other. I'd take a compression tester and make sure it doesn't have a broken rod. That's the first thing that comes to mind when the owner says it runs on one cylinder. Yeah, he claims it's a spark issue, but I wouldn't believe that unless you can prove it. I've been told all kinds of lies by people that wanted to sell a tractor to me.

Unless somebody's been swapping parts around, that's a 682. There is no manual lift 782...that's a 682.

Make sure the driveshaft couplers aren't worn and wobbly, as that's a fair amount of money to fix.

Yea those coils are outrageous! The PO said He had pulled the wagon with it back in the summer but it had been in the storage building since then. Said he switched wires and the one side stayed dead. I wore him out on price but like everybody else he sees those big prices on the net and thinks his is worth that too. Hard to convince people the net prices are over inflated.

MattG, thats what I was wondering about the coil. I was thinking more of a dead plug or bad wire. I had an onan one time that broke a rod and ran on one cylinder like that. Simple to check pull the plug and feel for the compression stroke to blow fuel and air out the plug hole.

I would have no problem owning a 682. You already know how good the 82 series style cubs are. The only thing at the moment I can think of that you will probably have to replace will be the drive line components, drive shaft, front and rear ball bushings and more than likely the black discs. Carb rebuild, new fuel line, new plugs, wires, air filter, and might as well replace the fuel pump. These are all of the items I have had to replace on my 1711 and the hour meter only showed just over 600 hours when I got back in the summer. Oh of course Hytran and trans filter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
