Angry 149 s/g problem

I need help. I bought this 149 couple weeks ago. The owner said it just quit moving while he was mowing in early spring. The hole in drive shaft wore out and pin dropped out. I got some new parts. I had to order a new ignition. key., it got lost some where. I put a new battery in this morning and as soon as I turn ignition key to the right, the s/g starts to turn very slowly. Should it not turn until I feel the spring tension on the key? I had the ignition switch out of the tractor to take with me, to order the correct key. 1st key didn't work. Pretty sure I have the 3 wires to the ignition switch on correct. Have a wiring diagram but the wires are so old it is hard to tell the color. All help appreciated.
Thanks.
Bob

You either have the switch mis-wired or the starter relay is stuck closed. The fact that it is turning over slowly indicates a weak battery or poor connections. Check the frame grounds (at the battery and at the S/G.) as well as the positive connections to the battery, the relay (under the dash, behind the gas tank) and at the S/G.

Default s/g problems

Thanks sawdustdad. I did indeed have two wires switched on the ignition switch. Got it started. It starts out by turning very slow and then turns over faster until the engine fires and starts running. Is this normal to the 149? Has a new battery and I cleaned both wire connections at the battery. Will have to clean other grounding spots as I locate them. Was driving it around my drive way late yesterday and the steering joint broke. Will probably replace all joints. I am going to Pennsylvania tomorrow to pick up another 149. Going to try to make one good tractor from the two. Thanks again for your help.

That's pretty typical behavior in my experience, especially when it's cold. Glad you got it started! The 149 is a great Cub. Good luck with the second one. We love pictures, BTW.

Yup, that's how my 147 starts (same engine.) Cranks slow, then quick, then slow, then quick. usually in the winter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
