Default Early Brownsville 782

I seem to have a knack for coming across early or late-build stuff.

I did a major tune up on a fellow Cubber's CCC 782, s/n 700750. It's a good example of the early use of old IH parts just after the Brownsville MTD plant got going. This one has the cast-iron rear in it (7 bolts on the diff cover and no fill tube), 'WP'-stamped bolts all through it, the old Borg hour meter (still working), and 'International' on the dash even though it's a yellow and white model. It even has a red lift cylinder! Guess they thought the new owner wouldn't care if they couldn't see it.

The tractor is in fair condition for the life it's lived; the man claims he's owned it for over 20 years, and this is the first major attention it's gotten in that time. No telling how many times that hour meter has turned over... Still carries 100#s compression in each cylinder and no smoke or serious blow-by on the venerable Series II. It stuck the #1 exhaust valve open at the end of last summer, and he ran it on one cylinder till mowing season was over in the fall. I got the valve unstuck and lubed the stem, put a new head gasket on, and it's back ready to work it's 31st summer.

The man has an identical, slightly newer yellow 782 and a basket case 1862 that are here now for a going-over. Neither are running, and will get attention this week...

Nice 782,
Seems the paint on my CCC built 582 tranny peeled off revealing red paint....

That's a pretty neat find! It looks like the owner's taken great care of it. Nice, original 782. Too bad you couldn't pry it away from him and add it to your collection.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
