He may be talking about the 12hp in his 123? Just as a guess I am going to say the PTO may be chattering a bit if the 3 anti rattle clips are gone.

Found this pic on Google images:

sorry. yes its my 123. and those rattle clips are gone. I was thinking also of that being the possible culprit. I haven't been able to find any clips for sale yet. I also did a slight rebuild this winter. everything was in spec. new piston, rings, rod. valves lapped. the knock was there before all of this too.

did the crank get measured/turned down? a new rod on an egg shaped crank will knock like crazy at certain rpms/loads. i had a 147 like that.

Talking Regarding knocks

I'm new to cubs but believe my knocking comes from 2 engine mount bolts missing and one other lose causing engine to slap up and down against the frame. Made a terrible noise. Will let you know if it solved the problem once it's up running again. Let me know. Good luck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
