charging problem..lt1042

The battery won't stay charged. The mower was give to me and it seems someone put a different engine on it. A bunch of the wires going to the engine have been taped up and pieced together. It has a briggs on it. Don't know the hp. Model 274729. What should the voltage read coming from the stator? It has a little box on top of one of the coil pack but nothing hooked to it. Has three terminals. Only one coil is hooked up but runs great and doesn't miss a lick. My other question is what's the power source to run the coils and where should the diodes be placed? Thanks..

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
