Default Should I buy new rings?

I have been working on my 1250's K301 recently and have found that I have absolutely no compression. I have looked under the head and found that the head gasket was shot. I replaced it today and tested again and found no improvements. The guy who sold the tractor to me said that it would need rings, but a buddy of mine looked and said that I should just replace the head gasket. So what should I do? I took the piston and connecting rod out tonight and looked at the rings they looked alright but maybe it could be something else. I thought I would just bring it up here and see what you guys would think to be the right move.

Well..... I would ask some other questions, but being you already took it apart, it's too late. I'd say slap some rings in it... If it doesn't fix it at least you can rule that out. BUT, if you do re-ring it, hone the cylinder so it will seat the rings.

Since you have the head off and the motor apart, might not be a bad idea to go ahead and take the valves out and check them too. They aren't stuck are they? How do the seats/ valve faces look?

If you tore it down already, I would "highly" recommend that you install a new Connecting Rod. The rod develops aluminum fatigue after 30 yrs and have a tendency to break apart. Don't ask how I know that.

Not too many things cause no compression, head gasket, valves sealing and piston going up and down with good rings are about it, if its all happening at the correct time.

Doesn't it have compression release. Doubt you'llget good readings if that is in working order

when the compression release fails the tab bends downward which takes the release away. when the spring falls off the weights stay out, I suppose the weights could be stuck in but it should still have something.
Did you ever actually put a gauge in this thing? at least put your thumb over the hole and crank it?
