Default overheating 3165

Little concerned how hot my Cub is running. Good belts sharp blades clean deck(48in.) block clean and no accumulation in shrouds. Cutting 3-4 in. grass at moderate ground speed at WOT. Temperature of valve covers - 260 - down from - 280 - after setting carb richer . Would not want to sit my butt on the hood with shorts on! Should I panic??? Bob

Raytec - Raynger ST - Laser unit. After mower you could not hold onto the Dip stick or touch any part of the shrouds.

I have to mow with the side covers off of my 3235 in the summer or the oil pressure lamp begins flickering after about 20 mins.

I'd like to see what the temps are with and with out the side covers since you have the tool to check it.

I had a 3165 and the dipstick got very hot after running. If your using an IR gun, most are not accurate on anything silver or that has a shine but are on flat black. When I had mine I noticed that the drive shaft cover (duct) went up into the dash tower for the air supply but the battery blocks a lot of that area off. I wonder if that could be a problem? Would it run cooler with the cover off the shaft?

Will try running with side cover off (hope Cub did not make this a fix). My tunnel boot runs into lower section of dash which has large vent area above the drive shaft tunnel. Will direct gun at area under carb or flat black spot. Bob

I've never shot a temp gun at one of these motors.... but.... Ditch Witch trenchers used air cooled Wisconsin motors. They were WAY bigger than any cub motor and than ran really REALLY HOT. (They had trouble vaporizing the gas in the carb bowl.) I really don't think 260° sounds out of line. Aluminum melt down is about 1200° and your a long way from that. I wouldn't worry unless you get up to about 325°. Cast iron exhaust manifolds get up to 600° or more under a load. I really don't think your running hot.

With side covers off - 255 - no great change (checked several spots ) . Matched set of PTO belts measured - 236 / 281 so need to replace those.

I'm not sure what the PTO belt has to do with anything..... did I miss something?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
