I have an LT 1050 with Kohler Command 26.
It's not charging. I have replaced the voltage regulator (VR) because I'm getting 39 VAC across the two white stator leads at the VR with engine at full speed. Kohler online book calls for 28 VAC or better. The book says if you are getting VAC to VR, replace the VR. I did, no fix. Also checked: -Ohms across stator leads is .001 (shorted) -Ohms from each stator lead to ground are open with VR disconnected (which I think is normal), and shorted (which I think is normal) with VR connected. -Voltage drop across battery ground lead to chasis connection is .001 VDC (good). -VDC on batt drops by about 1/4 VDC when PTO is engaged. -Purple B+ wire off VR shows grounded with key off and then connects to batt pos. post and not grounded with key on (seems normal, was looking for possible short in that wire) -After charging battery with wall charger, mower mows great for about 30-40 minutes, then PTO disengages when batt gets down to around 6 VDC. So the battery is still alive and well. Three questions- 1.The online Kohler book doesn't say if the VR should be connected when checking ohmage to gnd from each stator lead. Do you personally know? 2.It does say that the stator leads should be open (I'm showing shorted) between each other with VR disconnected. But, I'm getting VAC out of the stator. Is the stator still bad? 3.I can't find s**t for wiring diagrams online. I paid 4.95 for a service manual online but the wiring diagrams are illegible. Got a wiring diagram? A new stator is around $80, and of course I don't want to waste money for another no-fix. |

In order for the V/R to function correctly, the case (or housing) has to be grounded. With your DVM, measure between the V/R case and the Battery Negative Terminal. You should have very close to zero ohms. If you have any resistance (1> ohm), try a jumper wire directly from the Battery Negative Terminal to V/R case and see if that don't fix the problem. Let us know.

Hmm. Is there a sheet-metal strip with two holes in it that goes between one of the VR mounting screws (which are just into the plastic shroud) to the shroud hard-mount screw below it?

That was the problem!
The mower had been sitting a while and had bird's nests under the engine shroud. So I took it off to blow it out and look for the source of an oil leak. When I reassembled it (a few days later), there was a mystery piece left over that seemed inconsequential. Turns out that was the ground jumper for the VR. Installed it and I'm getting 14 VDC to the battery. Thanks R. Bedel! |
