1872 power steering "freewheeling"
Today we cleaned up my 1872 and 982. Neither tractor runs so we pushed them outside to pressure wash them. The 1872 steered hard but I think that's normal for power steering without the engine running.
After we washed the tractors we pushed them both back inside. As we were pushing the 1872 the steering wheel suddenly started "freewheeling" like there was no linkage connected to the front axle. Does the steering shaft have a joint that connects it to the steering valve assembly that might have failed? Why does the steering wheel spin freely with no turning of the front wheels?

you may have pulled all the oil from the system when pushing it. you were basically running the pump thru the wheels.

I agree with both guys, that's completely normal. If you ever get the engine running it will work right away. Mine usually works for about two or three turns and then it starts to get sloppy and then freewheeling.
