Need some input here.... Anyone have some views on Haban Sickle Mowers? What are they like - quality wise, ease of use, parts availability, cost to buy (age old question again, but in your area what are they worth?)?? Any input would be great! I have been watching one a guy is selling and just wondering if it is worth what he is asking for it or not. Just looking for some people's views....

I can say from experience that if that tractor is restored mechanically (engine rebuild, new driveshaft, rearend seals, gaskets, front wheel bearings, mechanical parts of mower, etc), as well as cosmetically, that he probably has between $1350 and $1800 in it. It's up to you to decide if it's worth that. The value of a restored tractor doesn't really depend on how many others of the same model there are in the area. Odds are there's a huge difference in condition. I wouldn't say those prices are crazy. Having refurbished a tractor, I'd say that's pretty reasonable if it was done well. When I sold my 100, someone got 300+ hours of my time for about $50....
I wouldn't pay that for that tractor because 1) I'm not really into 125s and 2) I'd rather do all the work myself...:biggrin2.gif: |

So what would an engine rebuild cost for a 125 roughly? I am talking doing it right the first time, replacing all the parts that are normally replaced during rebuild (gaskets, seals, carb kit, etc..) Lets assume you do all the work yourself, what on average is the parts going to cost? So people say there are lots of 125's out there - but are they a good solid machine? 2. How well does the engine hold up on them if maintained properly? 3.Do these tractors have any weak points to them? 4.How does the tranny hold out on them? 5.Is this mower that is mounted on it....is it going to be hard on the tractor or is it the correct one for it and the tractor wouldn't even know it was there? 6. What kind of ground clearance is under the shoe of these mowers when in the "up" position, do you have to worry about bottoming out when you drive over something rougher than your driveway?
Hey Matt, you like answering multi questions... :biggrin2.gif: |

my dads had a 125 for 20 plus years and hasnt had to do anything to it besides replace the original coil and clean the carb a couple times. ive heard and believe you cant realy kill a k series single cylinder Kohler if maintained properly???

I'm going to guess $350-400 for all OEM parts and machine work. Merk would have a better idea, he's rebuilt more Kohlers than I have Kohlers...hehe I had 3 or 4 125s...they're not my favorite but get the job done. The engine should last somewhere between 1000 and 2000 hours as long as it's been well-maintained. Nothing lasts forever...parts will eventually wear out and need to be replaced, no matter how good the maintenance was.
Weak points: LF spindle wear, and the engine/driveshaft interface. If that tractor is restored, these issues should both be corrected and good for years to come. If you're looking at that one on eBay, ask him a ton of questions...make sure you know what you're buying. Some people just paint the darn thing and call it a restoration... The trans is essentially the same one that's in your 982, and is pretty much bulletproof. A 7 hp will run that mower...125 will not know it's there. I don't have a sickle mower, so I can't help you with the last one. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
