First off, before I started looking around, I didn't realize that, in todays market, my idea and manufacturers and suppliers idea of a "heavy duty" log splitter was so vastly different.
Anyway I'm looking for a bad a$$ log splitter or "firewood Processor" (as some would say). Something perhaps like the one in the video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhmKBDIAXd0 I don't need all the bells and whistles though, just something with a hydraulic lift and capable of splitting large diameter logs.

I just had time to set down and re-read this post and realized that I never did ask a real question.
The question is, does anyone have any first hand knowledge of a good heavy duty log splitter?

in my opinion, there is no "heavy duty" wood splitter on the market today. sure the ones at tractor supply are nice, but they aren't what they are supposed to be. you would have much more luck making your own. ive seen wood splitters using a hydraulic cylinder from a cat dozer before and it would split anything you put it in. if you built your own splitter, you could build it to your own specs, and as heavy duty as you wanted. skys the limit if you have a GOOD welder and a set of torches, band saw and grinder.

Here's mine that I built about 10 years ago. Most of the stuff came from Northern tool. 5 hp honda. Jib crane and winch from harbour freight. Built from an old Lickity spliter(frame and wedge). X wedge I made. Back is shot so thats why I put on the crane instead of the hydraulic lift. I can drag a round from 50 feet away if I want to. Wireless remote also. Haven't found a piece of wood that it wont split.

See, now here is where I think an old gear drive with the rear PTO would be cool. Instead of having it's own motor, build a splitter that hooks to the cub, and the rear PTO runs the hydraulic pump. Then, one motor to maintain instead of two, and, you get to use the cub! How much more could you ask for!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
