Fired up the 149 this morning and all was well. It's cold here (37F) so I let it idle out for awhile before putting it to work. Got it all set for my first stripe of mowing (leaves mostly) and it just died about 40ft in to the first pass...
The culprit? A loose plug that took the threads out of the head on the way with it. I tried to chase the threads and it won't even bite the tap. On the motor, the head is done. Maybe I can heli-coil it and keep it as a spare, but regardless. I need a ready-to-run head for my 149. I'm not interested in any repairs more elaborate than a new gasket, replacement head, and clean-up, this late in the season. Sooo... If you've got one, name your price, shipped. Thanks!!! |

Not trying to tell you what to do but a helicoil kit is around $35 and stronger that original was. And you could be back running today.
Just my .02. Have a good one!

That said, I just bought a head that doesn't need repaired for $28 from another member. The bigger point is about how I choose to use my time vs. money. I'd rather have a "sure thing" showing up in the next few days vs. my skills (or lack there of) with a repair kit. Plus... "today" is going to end for me shortly. The only reason I was at it this early is because I was "still" up! ![]() Anyhow, thank you for your feedback! I'm still in the market for another-another head. I can't see that having a couple of spares is going to hurt (although this is the first time in over 25 years with that tractor that this has happened). |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
