Does anyone know the proper length belt for a QA-42 snowthrower on a 682? The supplier was not able to match the cub cadet number I had (78056). I was told 35" is what I need, but that is too short.
Also, I noticed that the angle of the blower pulley and pto pulley are not the same. The pto pulley tilts slightly back and the blower pulley is level/slightly forward. Is this normal? If not, is there a proper way to correct it? When I hooked up the thrower, everything 'seemed' to line up properly. So I don't know if something moved or I just didn't notice. One last thing, is there a supplier that sells the 5/8" pulley for the thrower? My thrower is the 'A' model and I believe it still has the 1/2" pulley. I thought since both the tractor and thrower came from the same dealer, maybe it was switched. However, the belt does not sit on both pulleys the same, so I believe I have the wrong pulley on the thrower. Thanks for any help! |

If you get the correct pulley on the thrower (which you can get new from Motion Industries) the 35" belt will probably fit or perhaps be a bit loose.
The PTO clutch pulley should definitely not be tilting...something must be worn. The thrower gearbox tilts a bit when the belt is tightened...this was giving me a lot of crap on mine and tearing up belts. I need to come up with a fix sometime when I have time. |

MotionIndustries.com....is that the correct website? Is there a part number available anywhere?
The pulley and pto unit seem to be fine. Its not just the pulley tilting, its the angle of the motor itself is different than the angle of the thrower pulley. Do you know if there is supposed to be a spacer on each motor mount bolt between the motor and the frame? I recently noticed that the two rear motor mount bolts were missing and both front bolts were loose. The front bolts had a spacer between the frame and motor (approx 1/2"). I found two others floating around inside the frame which I assumed were for the rear, and installed them with the new blots. Does this sound correct? I don't think this is the pulley problem, but it is the only thing I have done to the tractor. |

Pulley diameter is 4-1/2" standard.
You can get a Browing 4-1/4" Dia. 5/8"groove (3/4 bore) from Granger or Applied.com ( the old detroit ball bearing) if not from our suppliers The 1/4" smaller diameter helps a bit to make the thrower, throw better. You cannot use a cheap die cast pulley as they will split. I 'm not sure about your 682, but my 782 with a kt17 or magnum engine does not use a washer or washers under the motor. |

I got the same Browning 4-1/4" pulley from Motion Industries for about $22.
There are spacers between the motor and mounting plate. The PTO pulley is tilted back because the engine sits at a slight angle to line up with the transmission. The thrower pulley tilts because of slop in the slider mechanism. My plan for fixing mine is to take it all apart, clean off the 30-year-old grease that's lubricating the area where the gearbox plate slides on the QA frame, and then sandblasting/repainting the parts and then making shorter spacers with a tighter clearance so that the gearbox assembly can't tilt as much. I've had a ton of trouble keeping belts on mine, and I think a lot of the problem is because the thrower pulley is tilting. All of my belts have lasted less than half an hour and wear in strange ways. Before I came down to school, I realized that the pulley was working loose and walking backwards on the thrower gearbox, throwing the belt far out of alignment, and flipping it over. If you get a Browning pulley, add a second setscrew 90 degrees from the one it comes with, and use a jam setscrew and/or a retaining nut on both setscrews to keep them tight. |

I want to thank everyone for being so helpful and informative. However, I do have a few more questions though!
What is the proper way of measuring the width of the pulley or verifying what size it is? The two pulleys measure different at the widest point, but neither are 1/2 or 5/8. I don't want to buy another pulley if I already have the correct one. If I do have the 1/2" thrower pulley, would there be issues if I left it on? Not sure how much use the thrower got from the PO owners, but it has worked for them and worked so far for me (except I don't know the cause of the broken belt). What about shimming the bottom of the gearbox to create the same angle of the PTO pulley? I would be content leaving it as is, however, if this was the cause of the broken belt, I would like to take care of it. At $20 a belt, it can get expensive. Thanks again ![]() |

If the 5/8" belt fits all the way into the groove, it's a 5/8" pulley. There is a huge difference in size between the two widths...what's the width of the groove in the thrower pulley? You *might* be able to use a 1/2" belt, but I wouldn't count on it. The PTO clutch pulley is substantially wider than 5/8".
Actually, if you can post a picture of the thrower pulley, I could probably tell by eye what it is. You might be able to shim it, but you'll need to figure out a way to do it so you can still adjust the belt tension. |
