1710 repower
For those of you who like long stories, here you go.
A couple years ago, before yellow fever happened, through a series of circumstances I received a beautiful 1710 that looked spotless, but it had a blown motor, which of course I knew. When I got it I was not in a position to spend money to get it going, so into a storage shed it went, and there it sat. I grew up driving Cub Cadets (71 and 782) so I new I had a good mower but I did not have much of a need for one at the time either. Then things started to happen; my brother Jon (JMech) caught the yellow fever and it flowed over to me. Then after a few projects around the house that would have been better to have a Cub, it was time to get started. Motor: we found a doner tractor which is a 1541 with a M15. We'll I guess that would do, I really wanted a M18 or at least a kt17 series 2. So I got the tractor out of storage and into the shop to pull the motor, which was easier than I thought, it was my first time pulling a cub motor that I remember, only like 2 hours and that was with my boys 'helping' me. Then last night Jon and I were talking and he said he had good news. Kohler did not make a 15 horse motor. The m15 is a m18 block with a smaller carb. So, he said, we will rebuild the carb of your kt and PRESTO....M18!!!! No need to say I am really excited now. Accessories: I wanted to make a hydrolics lift but didn't want to spend the money, cause vacation is coming, but again last night Jon said he had parts of a ported hydro and all I needed to do was get some seals and a couple other things for it and we could drop that one it. So again I am getting even more anxious cause now all I need it control lever and linkage and I will have a full fledged 1811. Thanks tons to my brother and guys on this site for knowledge I have learned from it. I will keep this thread going with pictures up to finished product and I have a few other options planned while it's going together. Yes this is a long story but I am really excited for this because I don't have room for a lot of Cubs just one really nice one and it is well on its way.

This is just another example of people not taking care of their motors. This Motor probably would have ran many more hours but they probably didn't even know it was leaking oil, cause you can tell it had been for awhile. Then it got hot enough and put a hole in the block.
 Their loss my gain though.image.jpg

Hole looks the same as this Mag18 out of an 1882. The Gov gear failed on this one and it windowed the block. Engine still ran but no way to control RPM's.

Updated this thread to just a repower and not a convertion until later. I just want to get it up and going now. Power washed everything today and hoping to go pull the engine from the donner tractor soon. Here are a couple pictures of my helpers today.
