Default Snowthower springy thingy question

First I am on some meds for my back. so this may not make any sense...
I need to add a assist spring to my thrower. Not for lifting but to ease up down force on the ground. Seeing excessive wear on my snowthrower skids and it is not friendly to the concrete. My h48 has a float spring to lessen the weight on the ground. Was there ever an option like that for the H42? Hoping to find notes that I can make one from. Like how there are angle blade drawings.

I see a lot of new throwers have plastic or some other form of non-metal skids.
Perhaps that would be an option.

Or maybe you could fab up some sort of small wheel/roller ass'y to take the place of the skids.

I myself feel the weight of the thrower is an asset when it comes to heavy or packed snow.

My last setup I added springs so was able to control a bit with the number of springs. There are times when the extra force was needed to clean both mostly not. It also trades off ease to lift over bumps or edges, lighter can go faster on the uneven concrete. . I considered improving my runners and am considering adding wheels. With my back injury I am looking at a temp fix for this next now coming.

Eric's huge 551 snow blower had rather narrow skids that dug into our gravel driveways. We fabbed up a pair of about 3 inch wide skids, heated them and bent the ends up and welded them on his existing skids and that fixed our problem. Maybe a wider skid would help your problem. The suggestion of wheels seems intriging too. Sorry bout your back I have back problems too and it only hurts when you are still or move.

Looks like I just need to build it and post. :-) I plan to mount some sort of squeegee type of material for the cutting edge and wheels for the side. I already haev the material for the wheels plan. If not for my back it would have already been done.

I ended up with rusty lines on my concrete from the skids on my qa 42. I didn't want that and scratches all over my freshly paved driveway this yr so I made plywood skids. They wear quick, but take about 5 min to make. I was at the hardware store the other week and these wheels were 50% off, they'll be added this summer when my thrower gets rehabbed. I plan to bolt on some wings to the front sides of the blower to cover the added width of the wheel.

I cut some pieces from some old leaf springs. Then bent the ends and fabbed some mounts. I've used them three years now and are wearing good. The bigger skids keeps me up out of the gravel and floats a little instead of trying to dig in. Do you have the lift set to float to eliminate down pressure?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
