Default LT1042 Engine Replacement

I'm new at this so hold on - I have a 2008 LT1042 with a Kohler Courageous SV590-0003 that froze up on me day before yesterday - had it to the dealer and they say new engine (very expensive) - went on the Kohler site and they say the SV590 has been "retired" and show a SV591 as the new one available - can anyone help a guy "with little mechanical experience but good tools" to know if the two engines are interchangeable are not - I'm not very secure with the idea of having to modify the mower to make the new one fit - well there it is - I need "help" bad!

I checked on the Kohler website and the 590 is indeed gone and replaced by the 591. I would think it's interchangeable but not positive. Here is their website, you can look up the stats on it.

This is what SEW is showing for a replacement. It looks like they have a bunch of these engines and they are discounting them. The OEM engine looks like it was a 19HP while this is 18HP.

I'm looking seriously at this - wish I was a better mechanic so I wouldn't feel so much panic - loved my mower and disappointed with this lockup!

Looks like SEW also has the 590 for sale

http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/SV590-3211.html

The 591 appears to be an upgraded version of the 590. You may want to call Kohler and talk to them, maybe they can do something for you. Think I recall they were offering some kind of assistance because of the frequency of failures they were having with these engines.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that - I was disappointed that I was one year out of the warranty period and the dealer here in Natchitoches offered no help!

The swap shouldn't be to difficult. I did a similar engine swap on another color tractor last year, vertical shaft and belt drive and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was.

Good luck,
Bill

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
