As I get older I sometimes find myself questioning the way I've always done some things ie: changing the oil. As for me I have always warmed the engine and then drained the oil, but on the other hand it seems to make sense to drain it after all the oil has settled into the bottom of the pan, that way all of the contaminants are in the old oil and not still up in the top of the engine. I was just wondering how others change their oil. Hope this makes sense.

I always run it till it's good and warmed up so that the junk at the bottom is stirred up and it comes out when I pull the plug.

Changing oil warm comes from ND oil, changing it warm matters not with HD oil, and all the dirt is in suspension.
With ND oil, the dirt settles out, you gotta run it enough to get the dirt back into the oil, so it will drain out. The machine on the right had set a LONG time and had perfectly clear oil in the trans and engine ![]() I changed the oils, ran it 10 minutes, and the oil looked like it had 50 hours of use. |

If it is cold out, then I run it after having added a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase, not a whole lot. That allows it to flow a lot better to loosen and remove some of the thicker gunk.
