Default Engine swap CH20 for M18

First time cub owner, first time forum user!
I either have my future tractor of my dreams, or a very large paper weight !
A few weeks ago I bought an 1872, with the magnum 18. I was told by the seller that the governor gear was bad and I may need to find a new motor.
The motor was already out and I decided to tear it down to see how bad, bad could get.-- yep pretty bad! So--- here's my question;
I have an opportunity to use a Kohler CH20, in place of the Kohler Magnum 18. I wondered if anyone out there has used this motor in a 1872 or similar tractor
and what problems I may encounter with; electrical connections, PTO, flex coupling, etc...
Any help would sincerely be appreciated !

First, welcome to OCC.........

I have no experience in this arena. But if I were to do this retro, I would make sure that the CH20 is a Cub Cadet specified engine.

The two areas I would focus on are the PTO and the Drive Line. I am I not mistaken, the PTO on the CH20 is a larger Pulley Diameter vs the M-18. The engine drive cup may facilitate your present drive shaft.

The wiring will have some modifications, but that is not a big deal.

Yep. Easy swap. Ask me how I know. If you look around here you'll see a couple doing the same thing. Let me know what size shaft and how long it is on the CH. Easy way to do it is with the motor plate from a 1864, 2084 or 2284. Muffler from the same models and a drive shaft from a 2084 or 2284. You'll also need a pump adapter for the CV style drive shaft. Call the sponsors at the top of the page to see if they have the parts I mentioned. I have the pump adapters. Pics are of an 1882 I did a couple years ago that had a Mag 18 that puked it's Gov gear.

Hello, i know a person who did a ch swap and said the pto off the mag18 (k17) fit on a command with 1-1/8" shaft. You might have a length issue that can be delt with. There's lot of holes on the front of the command, some threaded some not. You can thread your own, the existing ones i believe are metric. Mike

The bolt holes are not metric.

OK! Wow! Thanks for the welcome and helpful info so far! Way more than I've got from the local shops!
OK, here's some answers to your Q's
-PTO shaft is 1 1/8"x 2 11/16", pulley diameter is 3" ID, 4 1/2 OD
-My PTO clutch plate does line up with 4 holes on the case, and the old bolts fit the threaded holes (I need to check the coil in it though)
-I'm from North Huntingdon PA

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
