Cub Cadet 1541 engine swap
Good morning group
I was wondering if a K series Kohler such as a 12hp will fit the 1541 model I'm working on? The M18S gave up a rod as the picture shows. I'm more of an IH guy and have very little experience with the MTD models so any help is appreciated. I really don't want to put any money in the M18S.

I'd look for a CH18 out of a 2185 or a Vanguard out of a 2160, 2165 etc.

The driveshaft length will change, along with the wiring, and possible the key switch (but seeing as how you make wiring harnesses, I'm assuming that isn't an issue). You will also need the engine rails from like a 1050, 1282, or similar. It would also need a fuel pump of some kind. Either mechanical on the block, or electric. Exhaust would be the next issue. It's a lot of work. Much simpler to look for one of the motors Sam listed.
