Default Whats the difference? k161 vs. k161s

I just bought a gasket kit for a k161 and it doesn't fit my k161s. I thought the only difference was the stoke of the piston. S means short block right! Please help!

It is advisable when ordering Kohler parts, not only use the Model number, but the Spec or specification number also. The K-161 is the base model number while the "spec" number identifies the variations.

K-161-S means "electric start".

Roland is correct. There difference in the early VS late 161's is the bore, not the stroke. The gasket should have worked. Perhaps they goofed and sent the wrong one.

The "K" series service manual has most of this info in it. Although, the early K161 (Actually is a K141) there isn't much info on. I only know what I have been told, and read as they are a pretty rare find with the original bore. The block can be bored to accept the new larger piston, and most have already been done.

Thanks fellows for your much needed wisdom. After some extensive reserch (if you will) I found the gasket guy did send me the wrong set. It was suppose to be for a K161 but received a K321 Kit. BIG DIFFERENCE! Again thanks guys for your help.

Not ever having a father to teach me these things sure made it rough, Im glad you all are here.

Thanks

To add....Kohler Spec Numbers are usually five digits in length. For the K-161, it will look like this: 28001, etc. Some spec number can be followed by a alpha character, ie: 28001A, etc. There can be several hundred variations to a base model to reflect the purchasers wants and needs.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
