Forgive me if I am asking something that has been covered before. I have a cub 3184 with a CH 18. I have had it for about 2 years now and love it. This season though I noticed it is burning a lot of oil (about a quart every 4 hours). Also it has been backfiring and bogging down when under load. I was thinking of rebuilding the engine and swapping the carb. Are there any tricks to this engine? Is there a specific kit needed to rebuild? Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a CH25 that pretty much did the same thing. are you fowling a plug on one side? if so check the head gasket and the intake manifold to head gasket for that cylinder.

I agree with Don, check the head gaskets. FWIW, these engines are expensive to open up. (Rebuild)

I don't believe the plugs are fouling out. I have rebuilt the carb and still have to run it almost full choke and still get some backfiring and sputtering. It runs good like that but once the deck is engaged it begins the bogging down process.

Ummmm...... well your not supposed to need to run it with the choke out. Your not getting fuel. Start with that.

I know and I know. Fuel pump and filter are only a few months old and carb is freshly rebuilt. Only thing I can think for fuel remaining is just to put a completely new carb on it. Kohler seems real proud of their parts and want to make sure I cover all my bases before ordering a carb I don't need. Is there something I do not know of?

Do you know how many times people on here say "I just rebuilt the carb and I'm sure it's clean, no plugged passages" and it turns out to be a plugged passage in the carb?........ about 5 times a month. Something is plugged. Carbs don't need replaced (new) unless the bowl is cracked or the throttle shaft has wore so far into the body that it can't be repaired. Pull the carb, and take it apart again. Use brake cleaner to spray through each and every little hole and look for it to exit somewhere. If it doesn't, it's plugged.

Looks like I became another statistic, the carb had some dirt inside the copper hole where the fuel shut off solenoid attaches. I had no clue that even came out. Also I pulled the spark plugs and one was completely fouled out. Both had some oil on the threads and plugs. So I guess I will probably do both cylinders in the off season. Just put some new plugs in for now. Thank you for the spot on advice.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
